Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. Being a single girl Scott was also raised with her grandmother, who was also maternal. Scott attended her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls and after she graduated she was accepted into Temple University. At Temple University, Scott had two jobs while she was taking classes in secondary education. She hoped to be an English teacher at high school. The dream however was ended when, after three years of studying and working as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of college. Her career began by performing live poems and writing her own material. She eventually joined forces with Amir Quest Thompson, a musician in The Roots. You Got Me is the outcome of their collaboration. In a Roots show she came out in the spotlight as an artist. Later, she secured collaborations artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. She was also able to learn about performing arts through the Broadway tour across Canada's musical Rent. She became the first signed artist for the Hidden Beach Recordings label.
